This seems that it would be very time consuming, as every time if someone has to erase a character , first they have to select the eraser. Then go to the place where they have to erase and then again de-select the eraser.
Is there any other better alternative?

the only solution is that the user does a "true" scratch out, no a simple gesture.
Based on our experience, the user will "learn" to do a scratch out.

What is the best way to erase only a particular character?
More specifically if we have written something like "ABC" and we want to only delete "B".
We did try "/". Most of the time it works but sometimes the character gets converted into another character.

the easier is that you set an "erasure mode" (e.g. a rubber).
